What separates the Wow! From the whatever?? And what really makes a life-changingly good one?? Read on...
As us women go, we tend to be creatures of habit when it comes to our staple beauty products, especially when it comes to mascara choice. Sometimes its easier just to stick to what what you know BUT if you feel like testing the waters here’s my recent pick of the pack, and a dissection of what type of mascara it is...
Wowsers!! This one isn’t for the faint lash hearted! From the first stroke you reach an extreme level of volume & length. This is for the ladies who like a visible, false lash look with minimal separation. Probably the most dramatic mascara Ive tried so far!
Very long wearing and definitely needs an oil based eye remover.
This has been my go-to when the others fail for many years. Its quick drying formula means you can layer to your hearts content, It’s 60% volumising, 40% lengthening so it’s a good all rounder. Also great layering with a super dramatic mascara after for an extra dramatic look. Long wearing and non-transferring on lids.
is an amazing mascara as it covers both bases with two different wands- one for a sheer & natural look, the other extremely dramatic. I adore layering this mascara, the pink handled wand gives a gorgeous separation and a light amount of length, then adding (just a coat on the tips) of the purple wand gives the extra volume & length needed. Don’t layer the dramatic wand too much else you will be reaching for a lash comb to remove the excess!
A big plus with YSL mascaras is the heavenly smell of the rose oil infused in them, which also explains the wet looking texture to them. Id say it gives 70% volume, 30% length and remains quite silky and wet. Semi long wearing, feels nice to wear.
A clever bent ‘swan neck’ wand that allows a quicker, more angled application on the eye gives it a big thumbs up. The texture is rather wet looking which means it’s not ideal to over layer, which isn’t necessary as one sweep gives a lot of volume. The lengthening is lighter, I’d say it is 70% volume, 30% lengthening to give it the appearance of a more dramatic look. Long wearing and non-transferring.
A fantastic budget beauty product, this rimmel mascara gives a quick bold lash that gives the appearance of extensions. Very volumising this would be a 70% volume 30% lengthening lash that stays quite silky & wet looking. For lovers of a super sized brush Long wearing but glides off with most eye makeup removers.
This is my natural & long wearing go to mascara, perfect also for the gym as its 16 hour lasting & smudge resistant (its still on after a 7km run!) The tiny brush coats every single lash and separates and defines perfectly. I love defining my lashes with this and then adding a more dramatic one over the top if necessary. Extend play has a drier texture which allows quick layers to be applied and built up. It would be a 30% volume 70% length ratio in my opinion.
A big name comes with big shoes (& big price point!) but it wasn’t in any way a disappointment. The Extreme lash gives dramatic but very feathery look to your lashes, created by the powder-like particles in the formula; which also add serious drama. A happy medium between thickening and lengthening I give it a 60% volume and 40% length ratio. Long wearing but easy to remove.

IT Cosmetics Tightline lash primer www.sephora.com $55
In case you were wondering - yes, a lash primer makes a huge difference to the look of your lashes! I'll admit, when I first pulled out the tiny wand from the tube, I was sceptical. But after applying a coat of this wonder product to your top and bottom lashes, I promise that your favourite mascara will look bigger and more elongated than ever before. It's also great used on its own for a sheer and separated look. Bonus: the formula contains lash building serum to boost lash growth while you wear it.
The latest addition to the iconic Diorshow range, this primer contains a serum that actively works to promote lash growth while you're wearing it. Don't be put off by the white looking liquid, the texture is very lightweight and invisible once mascara is applied over the top. The big brush gives extra volume as well as length, and once you see the results, you'll think twice about using plain old mascara alone.
